Originally called Abbeyville, a new name for the town had to be chosen in the late 1800s after it was revealed that another town called Abbeyville already existed in Minnesota. Though its exact origin is not known, stories point to the town’s name originating from stage actress Lizzie Annandale or perhaps the Annan River in Scotland; whatever the case, Annandale was officially incorporated in 1887, and the name has stuck since.

Much of Annandale’s early prosperity was due the arrival of the Minneapolis and Pacific Railroad, later called the Soo Line, in the 1800s. Prior to the existence of a developed road network the presence of a rail line in Annandale allowed it to flourish when compared to surrounding communities.

Farming has always been a rich part of Annandale’s history. Though initially known for grain and livestock, by the 1940’s 90% of the industry in our area was dedicated to dairy farming.
